Chapter 12

Bexley Blackforge

My brow dipped in confusion as I looked around the roof we stood on, trying to figure out when we’d broken the surface while traveling up the winding staircase from underground. I hadn’t felt any temperature or pressure difference, nor had there been any windows to signal it. It was disorienting, and I wasn’t sure how we were going to handle our current predicament.

Not all of us could shift into an animal that flies, and even among those of us who could, we weren’t in the best shape. But there wasn’t another easy way to get down without going back down the staircase, which was an option I wanted to avoid. Aside from the fact that we’d heard the footsteps of Linan’s men down below on the last leg of our journey, I doubted I’d be able to restrain myself a second time from checking each and every floor we passed to check for women. To try and set them free, even if I knew we weren’t equipped.

We couldn’t do anything without more forces and more power—at least not without incurring casualties, and that was an outcome I would never accept.

“I think I’m nearly strong enough to shift…what about you guys?” I asked my mates. Breaker shook his head, answering for both himself and my dad, who he was still supporting. Gage’s look wasn’t any more encouraging, pointedly glancing at my mom who was clutching him for support, one hand shielding her eyes, which were already squeezed shut. Olivia, who was riding piggyback on Fletcher and talking to Rachel, was doing something similar until Thomas draped his jacket over her head.

I couldn’t imagine the strength it had taken for Carol to send her away, especially given that the girl had probably never left her mom’s side before. And Olivia…had she even realized before now that there was a whole world outside the bars of her cell? An entire family she hadn’t met?

“Once the wards disappeared, I began getting my magic back,” Jagger said. “I could easily shift. Are you sure you can shift already, little treasure?” I heard my dad grumble in response to the nickname, which pulled the smallest smile onto my lips.

“I can try,” I assured them, wanting to be as strong as my mates. “Mom, Dad, you’ll probably have to ride on one of us, unless we want to try to get down to the main level.”

“That’s not a good idea,” Rachel called out. “Come look.”

Joining her and Rebecca at the edge of the building, a curse left my lips. Wolf shifters stood in the streets, looking up at the building with angry expressions. Linan stood out to me, his grim smirk filled with victory and amusement and a hint of malice. It was an uncomfortable contrast, to say the least.

“Bexley,” he said, his voice amplified by some type of device. Or magic. My gaze darted around him, looking for the magic user that helped him, but I saw no one of note. “It’s a shame you were only able to get yourself and your friends out.
